Blogging falls within the category of Social Media Marketing, because most blogging platforms are tailored to social interactions within a wider community of bloggers and readers.  Blogging has the following social characteristics:

  • Readers can comment on posts and show approval or disapproval though varieties of ‘like’ and ‘dislike’ buttons.
  • Readers can share posts via their social media platforms.
  • Bloggers can syndicate their blog content via Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social networks.

In addition to these social features, blogging is an effective way to meet many of your marketing goals, such as community building and engagement, brand awareness, online reputation management and search engine optimization.

With an estimation of over 100 million blogs on the internet, 70 million (WordPress) and 39million (Tumblr) it’s plain to see why ‘Blogging’ is included in one of Social Media’s ‘BIG 5’!

What’s in a Blog?

The word ‘blog’ is a combination of the two words ‘web’ and ‘log’, its an informational site published on the internet consisting of entries and posts. Since starting as a form of online journaling in the 1990’s, the act of Blogging has evolved into a full time profession, where bloggers showcase content from individuals who are specialists in their field.

Are you familiar with ‘hosted blogs’ and ‘self hosted blogs’? A hosted blog requires a 3rd party set up whereas a self hosted blog requires an independent set up. To start your blog, you’d need to choose a Blogging platform.
